Every few weeks we will shine the spotlight on one of our great team Partners. We want to acknowledge that without them, our team would not be possible. With the best services and products on the market, it’s our duty to share what we already know, we have the best Partners!!
Our Partner Spotlight is Topical Edge Lotion with Biocarbonate
Topical Edge isn’t your typical performance supplement, in fact, there’s nothing else quite like it on the market. In order to get a clear idea of what Topical Edge is, and how it can be a benefit for athletes, we’ll start with the science around the main ingredient found in the product: sodium bicarbonate.
Sodium bicarbonate, or more commonly known as baking soda, acts as an acid buffer, and as athletes, one huge limiting factor during exercise and recovery is the amount of lactic acid that’s accumulated in the muscles. Numerous studies over the past couple of decades have shown performance advantages in athletes using sodium bicarbonate supplementation due to its ability to alkalize the blood and reduce the acidification of muscle. Unfortunately, bloating, gas, and vomiting are severe side effects of oral supplementation, which up until now, had been the only way of taking sodium bicarbonate.
Topical Edge’s parent company Ampersand Biopharma developed a way to bypass these problems with a patented transdermal delivery system that passes molecules through the skin and 1-inch deep into the muscle. Although the delivery system was first developed for medical use, company founder and avid triathlete Ryan Beal knew there were huge sporting implications for the product as well.
We’ve all heard a myriad of claims from supplement companies through the years, but Topical Edge has taken the steps to actually validate the product through clinical trials, including the most recent double blind, randomized, placebo controlled, cross-over study completed at San Diego State University by Dr. Mark Kern using elite cyclists, including Monster Media Racing’s own Phil Tinstman. Each subject completed a range of tests that included ramping intensity, 30-second, 5-minute and 60-minute maximally paced efforts. Dr. Kern’s study found three key benefits when athletes were using Topical Edge vs placebo:
● Faster Recovery
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness was reduced by 53.5% the day following a series of short, intense efforts.
● Less Taxing Effort
Test subjects recorded a 1.6% decrease in heart rate immediately following a 5-minute maximal effort. Heart rate was 3.1% lower and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) was 2.6% lower measured 15 minutes into a 1 hour time trial.
● Lactic Acid Buffering
An 11% increase in blood lactate levels means more fuel is available for your body to burn, with less lactic acid in the muscles to slow you down.
Equally as notable as the changes in blood lactate and reduction in heart rate/RPE documented in the Topical Edge control group is the reduction in muscle soreness, or DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), which plays a huge part in when an athlete can train and perform at their best again after a hard workout.
Since using Topical Edge is as easy as applying sunscreen pre-ride, it’s an easy way to improve performance and reduce recovery time. Also of note, and something that is important to all of us is that every batch of Topical Edge is tested and guaranteed to be free of banned substances under the Informed-Sport program.
